The Great Sauk State Trail- Sauk Prairie segment cooperative plan provides the framework for creating a recreational trail that connects Devil’s Lake State Park to the Sauk Prairie villages of Prairie du Sac and Sauk City. The trail will provide a venue to users to experience the unique geology, rich history and ecological importance of southeastern Sauk County. The final plan was released in 2016 and is featured above and additional information can be found below.
On September 24, 2014 the Great Sauk Trail Commission hosted an event designed to provide information on the trail planning process and to father input from the public. Over 200 people participated in this process. Their input was compiled into the report listed above.

In 1988 and again in 1990 the Pink Lady Rail Transit Commission (PLRTC) partnered with Sauk County UW-Extension to conduct a rail use survey of the line from Merrimac to Reedsburg, WI (approximately 22 miles). In 2010 a similar survey was emailed to 13 industries that utilized rail in 2009. The pdf is the survey summary report.
The Excelsior Town Board partnered with the University of Wisconsin – Extension to conduct a survey designed to gather residents’ input on their preferred level of Emergency Medical Service (EMS) service for their portion of the town.
